The Funeral

Arranging a funeral can be especially difficult, when a family member or loved one dies. We are here to help, assist and advise you to provide a unique tribute to their life.

The costs of a funeral can vary, depending whether the funeral is to be a cremation or a buriala basic simple funeral cost for 2019 would be as follows:

Taking instructions, making all necessary arrangements and attendance at local funeral; administration, bearers and gratuities £1260.00
Removal of deceased from place of death, within 25 miles radius, into our care, preparation and care of deceased prior to funeral £380.00
Provision of hearse for funeral £285.00
Provision of fully mounted traditional coffin suitable for burial or cremation £330.00
£2255.00


Please note that this does not include the hire of any limousines, embalming, or disbursements that may be payable to the crematorium, to the cemetery or to a church if required. It also does not include a notice in the newspaper, order of service or flowers.

Purchase of Ground

The cost to purchase new ground in a cemetery in the Scottish Borders is £1034.00.
For Woodland Burials this fee is £824.00. This cost includes a tree and a marker.

Interment Fee

In addition to the fee to purchase the ground, there will be an interment fee of £739.00

The crematorium fee is a fee that is paid by the funeral director to the crematorium for carrying out the cremation and for the use of their chapel for your allocated time.
The fee for the use of the chapel at Borders Crematorium is £845.00

These fees are reviewed and revised annually and are subject to change.

Once the funeral arrangements have been completed, we’ll issue you with a full written estimate itemising our costs and the things we’ll be paying on your behalf such as crematorium and newspaper fees. We’ll issue an invoice after the funeral and payment is due within 30 days. Payments by cash, cheque and bank transfer are all accepted.

If paying for the funeral may be a problem please just let us know at the time of making the arrangements and we’ll take you through the various options available.

Help with the cost

Anyone in the United Kingdom can get help with the cost of a simple funeral if they do not have enough money to pay the full cost. To qualify you must be receiving one of these benefits: income support, council tax benefit, disability working allowance, family credit, housing benefit, second adult rebate.

If you would like to talk to someone about funeral payments get in touch with your Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) or talk to someone at an advice centre like the Citizens Advice Bureau. They will advise you on the amount of financial help you can expect based on your own circumstances.
